If you cannot choose just one, what are your favorite books in each category:
Picture book
Beginning Reader
Chapter Book
Classic
Non-Fiction
Parents are allowed to have their own favorite books, and their children's favorite books. I've been thinking about this ever since someone asked the question on an ALA forum "Is it okay for a child to have a favorite book?" I can't imagine why not, but I will talk about that more tomorrow.
Thanks for commenting!

Alright I'll try again. My favorites--in no particular order.
One monster After Another
Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus
The Wugly-upm
Outside Over There
The Hundred Dresses
Ultraviolet Catastrophe
The Boxcar Children (the original)
The Hobbit
Plum
The Country Bunny and the Golden Shoes
Anything Babar
The Secret Garden
Series of Unfortunate Events
Billywise
His Dark Materials
The Chronicles of Prydain
I'm sure there's more but I'm too sleepy to think of them.
I guess I was a bit of a book slut - always looking for the next Mr. Goodbook rather than staying faithful to a single tome. But I was (and still am) a big fan of Dr. Seuss. "To Think that I Saw It on Mulberry Street" and "The Sneetches and Other Stories" were favorites. When I got older, I loved "A Wrinkle in Time" and "The Secret Garden." And, of course, all things Nancy Drew.
There really is a Mulberry Street in Springfield, MA, where Dr. Seuss was raised. It runs behind the high school near downtown.
I think there are some interesting things to think about on this topic, though. "Best book" versus "favorite book," for one. Also, what "was" your favorite children's book as a child versus what "is" your favorite children's book as an adult.
Old Turtle by Douglas Wood, Zen Shorts by Jon Muth, Skippy Jon Jones series by Judy Schachner, Bean Thirteen by Matt McElliott, Bad kitty by Bruel, Miss Suzy by Miriam Young, The Practical Princess by Williams (out of print), I Crocodile by Marcelino, Never Tease a weasel by Soule....I love discovering and rediscovering picture books!!
A Girl Of The Limberlost, by Gene Stratton-Porter
Winnie the Pooh
Hmmmm. Favorite doesn't necessarily equate with best. I always try not to answer questions like this, for reason's similar to M's. Where the Wild Things are, or Charlotte's Web? Very different creatures, but each is nearly perfect. And I do love that Winnie the Pooh, especially when he and Piglet are tracking Woozles...
