Information Literacy Teaching the Research Process

The core of information literacy instruction and curriculum is the research process. There are several models for this process. I have used three, all of which have common elements.

When I taught in a Jesuit school, I used the Ignatian Research Process, which was first developed by Melody Degnan at Rockhurst High School in Kansas City.

I have also used the Big Six Research Process www.big6.com and the Information Fluency model from the Illinois Math and Science Academy. http://21cif.imsa.edu/resources/difcore/

All three models follow similar patterns, and contain the key elements of :
defining the question

planning a search strategy, which includes creating a list of key words and determining what resources to search

searching for information, using a variety of sources and research strategies

evaluating the information found for relevancy and accuracy

using the information in an ethical manner

synthesizing the information into a product which can communicate new information or ideas.
